Fixed Properties (Data)

Riffyn uses two types of properties for capturing experimental data:

  1. Fixed Properties
  2. Non-fixed Properties

Fixed properties of a resource have the same value throughout all runs of all experiments. Thus editing a resource's fixed property will change it for all runs of all experiments e.g. "batch ID", "sample time", "part number", and "manufacturer". Depending on the situation, a "serial number" may be specified as a fixed property of a resource type or its value could be written as the resource name itself.

Non-fixed properties of a resource will exist only on the one run where those values have been assigned explicitly. Therefore, the values of a resource's non-fixed properties may change from run to run across one or more experiments e.g. "mass", "time", and "volume".

A resource's fixed and non-fixed properties will be automatically exported as run data. Any resource fixed property values will be overwritten by the values of a newly assigned resource. For best results using fixed properties, we recommend:

  1. Use fixed properties on outputs to capture their values as the outputs are created.
  2. Use fixed properties on input or pass-through resources to display property values that were created elsewhere.
  3. Avoid writing fixed property values to inputs prior to resource assignment as they will be overwritten by the assignment. To avoid this consider writing those same values to the Experiment Plan instead.
