Plate Mode: Plate Transfer Interface

Riffyn's Plate Transfer interface can be used to efficiently transfer resources between plates. At its simplest level this is achieved by specifying the source and destination plate IDs and sizes and allowing Riffyn to create runs and resources on the step which represent the transfer from one plate to another.

1) Access to the Plate Transfer Interface

The Plate Transfer interface can be accessed by selecting "Plate" at the top of the bottom panel in Measure Mode. The text will help guide you through the steps.

 

 

 

2) Configure source plate search parameters and destination plate settings

The two drop-down menus at the top of the panel select the types of resources to be transferred on the step. In the example below, resources from plates of type "cell culture" will be transferred to create destination plate resources of type "New cell culture":

 

Both source and destination well resources must contain information to identify their location on a plate. Each resource requires a plate identifier, and row and column information. By default the plate transfer interface tries to use system-defined fixed properties called "Plate ID".
"Row" and "Column" to find source plate well resources, and write information to destination plate resources. It is possible to use properties other than system properties for both finding source plate resources and writing destination plate resources by selecting the configuration icons at the right of each dropdown.

Source plate search parameters can be defined to help Riffyn search inventory for the correct resources with selected property names.

 

Destination plate mapping parameters can be defined to allow the plate transfer interface to  create output resources with properties describing the location of each well on the current step.

 

3) Add transfer rules

A new transfer rule can be added by clicking the "+" button at the bottom of the screen, next to the words "PLATE ACTIONS". 

 

Input source plate information is entered on the left and output plate information is entered on the right.

For each transfer rule users must specify

  1. a source plate ID,
  2. a source plate size,
  3. a transfer type (see more information below),
  4. a destination plate ID, and
  5. a destination size.

By default transfers are assumed to be of the "Copy" type and both source and destination plates are assumed to be of the 96-well size (8 rows x 12 columns). Additional plate sizes and transfer types (including a "no transfer" option for pass-through resource types) are available from their respective drop-down menus. For each transfer type a specific well-to-well transfer example is provided in parentheses for transfers between 96-well plates or, for Quadrant transfers, between 96- and 384-well plates. Once all parameters have been specified, users must click the "Verify" button before they can create runs and associated data using the "Apply" button: 

After clicking the Verify button the Plate Transfer interface will report how many source resources were found in the inventory corresponding to the specified source Plate IDs:

 

A green check mark will be displayed next to each row where

  1. the number of source resources found in inventory is less than or equal to the number of wells expected from the specified format
  2. each source resource is associated with a unique combination of "Row" and "Column" values
  3. the specified transfer type is allowed for the specified source and destination plate Sizes.

An error icon will be displayed and the "Apply" button will remain inactive if any of these conditions is not met. Mousing over the error icon will provide an error message with feedback to help clear the error state. If no errors exist the "Apply" button can be used to trigger the plate transfers. Runs and resources will be visible in the "Actual" tab.
